THE FIRST DAY of college is a significant experience in every student’s life. As the gates of San Beda University (SBU) open to welcome its new freshmen, a mixture of excitement and nervousness fill the air borne from the sea of unfamiliar faces, the maze-like campus, and the anticipation of endless possibilities. Stepping into this uncharted territory may quite literally feel like stepping foot into a Lions’ Den.
But fear not, dearest Cubs! This Den isn’t a place to be devoured, but a place to be nurtured and empowered. As you navigate this new daunting chapter of your life, here are some of our tried-and-tested ways to conquer those first-day jitters and help you get comfortable in your new home.
Attend the Freshman Welcoming Day (FWD)
The Freshman Welcoming Day (FWD) is a special event designed to introduce you to campus life, learn about the University, meet its faculty and student-leaders, explore resources available to support your academic journey, and most importantly, to start building friendships with your fellow freshies!
Don’t be afraid to break the ice and begin forging friendships that will be an invaluable support system throughout your college life. You might just meet your future study buddy, roommate, or even lifelong friends who have your back even after graduation.
An early Lion catches the prey
To set a confident tone for your first day, aim to arrive early before the hustle and bustle begins. Being early allows you to navigate the unfamiliar campus without feeling rushed, locate your classrooms beforehand, and settle in comfortably before the professor arrives. This early first-day preparation can significantly reduce first-day anxieties.
You can explore at your own pace, find your classrooms beforehand, and even locate the nearest restroom–all without the added stress of a crowded hallway. Settling into your seat comfortably before the professor arrives can significantly reduce first-day anxieties, allowing you to take breaths and even engage with your classmates beforehand.
After all, taking a few quiet moments to gather your thoughts and composure can make a world of difference in how you approach the rest of the day. It might just be a good habit to build for the whole semester!
Curiosity matters
Getting lost, not catching what the professor said, or needing clarification on a concept – these are all normal hiccups in the freshman experience. The key is not to panic. Respectfully ask your fellow classmate or even the professor what you missed or do not know. Don’t be afraid to ask relevant questions – seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Remember, even the toughest of Lions were once first-year students like you, and most people are willing to lend a hand anyway. By asking relevant questions, you gain a deeper understanding or clarification on the subject and demonstrate your eagerness and engagement in the topic.
A smile to light up the whole campus
Beyond the classroom, having a good relationship with your batchmates is equally as important. Bejewel your classmates by showing off your smile when you walk to the room and make the whole place shimmer! A simple smile can go a long way in making a positive impression. Be approachable and open to meeting new people. Initiate conversations and engage with your peers in group projects or during breaks.
You might find yourselves sharing study tips, grabbing coffee between classes, or even exploring the campus together. This support system will not only make your college experience more enjoyable but can also help you in academic and personal challenges you may encounter throughout your journey.
Embrace challenges as opportunities
Experiencing a few bumps on your first day is normal. Approach these experiences with an open mind and a willingness to learn! Whether it’s adjusting to the pace of classes, finding your way around campus, or meeting new people, each challenge helps in building resilience. Embrace these moments as they are small steps towards personal and academic growth.
Think of these experiences as building blocks that will help you navigate future bumps and hurdles with greater confidence, calmness, and ease. College is a journey filled with exploration and discovery, and unexpected bumps and detours will happen. Nevertheless, embrace the learning process, both inside and outside the classroom, and remember that these experiences are normal and contribute to personal growth.
With a positive attitude and a willingness to adapt, you’ll find yourself better prepared for whatever comes your way.
Entering the Lions’ Den can be intimidating, but it also marks the beginning of an exhilarating journey. With a brave heart, strong mind, and undaunted spirit, you can conquer your first-day jitters and pave the way for an exciting and enjoyable college experience. Welcome to the pride and roar with confidence, Class of 2028!
