WELCOMING NEW STUDENTS into San Beda University (SBU), the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) community welcomed the Class of 2028 at the annual Freshmen Welcoming Day (FWD) last July 31.
Talking on the culture of FWD, Prof. Marvin Reyes, PhD, the Prefect of Student Affairs, explained how its primary goal was “to orient and make the freshmen realize the ins and outs of San Beda, orient them with the policies of the FOD and brief them into what’s going on with the campus.”
Every Academic Year, the FWD adopts a particular theme to make the event “more creative and engaging.” For this year, the CAS Student Council (SC) embraced the Science-Fiction (Sci-Fi) genre where all 14 Professional Student Organizations were given a chance to choose a television series or a movie where they can get their inspiration from when welcoming the freshmen into their respective programs.
During the entirety if the event, the Bedan Information Technology Society (BITS) chose Fallout; Human Resource Development Management Society (HRDMS), Madame Web; Junior Bedan Law Circle (JBLC), Despicable Me; Junior Financial Management Association (JFINMA), Divergent; San Beda Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA), The Matrix; Kapisanang Agham ng San Beda (KASB), Back to the Future; Management and Entrepreneurship Society (ManSoc), Avatar; Psychology Society of San Beda University (PSSBU), Dune; San Beda Economics Society (SBES), Men in Black; San Beda English and Literature Society (SBELS), Star Wars; San Beda Junior Marketing Association (SBJMA), Guardians of the Galaxy; San Beda Sports Science Association (SBSSA), Space Jam; Society of Operations Management Students (SOMS), Stranger Things; and The Repvblic (TR), Alice in Borderland.
During the first half of the activity, the new breed of freshmen gathered at the Old Gate of SBU to formally welcome them into the University and proclaim them as officially Bedans. Following this, the freshmen were escorted by their corresponding professional organization to begin their series of activities relative to their chosen program.
In the afternoon session, freshmen were ushered into the Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP) Gym where an orientation program was hosted by the CAS SC. Here, students were introduced to the Bedan culture, engaged in games, introduced to Bedan Administrators, and entertained by performances from the Bedan Musician’s Guild (BMG) and the Bedan Dance Theatre (BDT).
After the event, SC President, Mari Ernestinne Okol, recognized the importance of camaraderie between student organizations and volunteers in making this event possible, saying “In order to build a community, there must be the people that make up the memories and experiences in the institution.” She also added how “It is the people that play the most vital role in making an experience memorable.”
Lastly, she stressed out that, “As freshmen, students are curious to get to know the University, there is no one else more capable to give a glimpse of what to expect than the people who have walked the halls of San Beda.”
