AFTER A PERIOD of uncertainty, the San Beda University (SBU) Band formalized its return as an organization under the Student Organization Circle (SOC) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), signifying a transition from its prior affiliation with the University’s Athletics Department last March 22.
In a statement made in their official Facebook page last January 21, members of the Band announced their departure from the organization due to “underlying internal issues.”
“It has come to our realization that the Band we poured our hearts out for is getting a reconstruction of its whole structure, devaluing the traditions, camaraderie, and the redefined brotherhood that we stand for,” the post read.
However, on March 22, the Band made an appearance at the culminating event of the 2025 CAS Sportsfest and Integration Week, specifically during the community bonfire and Integration Rites.
Dr. Marvin Reyes, PhD, Prefect of Student Activities, confirmed that the Band’s return was issued by Rector-President Rev. Fr. Aloysius Ma. Maranan, OSB.
“It was last week when the Dean [of the CAS] called me and said that the Father-Rector would like to revive the SBU Band… so natuwa naman ako,” said Dr. Reyes.
Dr. Reyes also explained how the SBU Band is now exclusively under the CAS, marking a departure from its initial status as an institutional “athletics” organization.
“Pero ngayon, the [SBU Band] will be part of the Student Organization Circle (SOC). In short, parang magiging CAS organization sila. [Kapag] CAS organization, walang Senior High School, kasi diba ‘yung Band natin na institutional there’s Senior High School,” he said.
Regardless, he assured that the Band can perform its prior duties without restrictions, but they will act as if they are a CAS or SOC organization in terms of their function.
“Ganun pa rin…same pa rin—they will play, they will play for the team… wala namang restrictions…Pero mag-uundergo sila ng accreditation, magsusubmit pa rin ng documents, mamimili pa rin sila ng kanilang magiging moderator, and so on.”
Speaking to The Bedan, SBU Band President Allen Dominic Rogel reflected on the weight of their return, admitting that their decision to leave was not a decision they made willingly.
“Hindi naman kasi namin ginustong umalis eh. So, it was very hard for us, ‘yung decision na ‘yun,” he emphasized. “Kaya siguro ngayon very emotional pa rin, medyo hindi pa nag-sisink in na andito na kami, bumalik na kami.”
Rogel also expressed his deep appreciation for the community, saying, “We are very thankful sa help ng Student Council, at syempre sa members ko—kasi kahit medyo matagal na kaming ‘di nakapalo, nag-stay sila. Tinulungan pa rin nila akong ibalik ‘yung banda kung ano ba talaga ang dapat.”
Ultimately, the team captain believes that there will be no changes in the structure upon their return. “Nothing new. We just continue to do our jobs. Always for San Beda, our country, and God.”
