THE SAN BEDA Lady Red Spikers notched their first win in Season 100 with a 3-1 victory over the SSC-R Lady Stags during the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre last April 27.
The Lady Red Spikers struggled to outperform the Lady Stags in the opening set, falling behind by a large margin of 6-18.
After their first timeout, San Beda pounced their way back as they narrowed the gap but barely missed a decisive comeback to which the Recto-based squad claimed the first set, 21-25.
In the second set, the Lady Red Spikers and the Lady Stags went head-to-head in a fierce exchange, trading points with a narrow gap, 10-9.
After a timeout, the Lady Red Spikers broke away with a 19-14 lead forcing the Lady Stags to call for a desperate timeout.
As the second set neared its end, the Lady Red Spikers began to lose their grip, allowing the SSC-R Lady Stags to stage a retaliation, forcing San Beda Lady Red Spikers to burn a timeout, 23-22.
With the pressure mounting and the match point on the line, Reyann Cañete rose to the moment, delivering the decisive blow and securing the second set for the Lady Red Spikers, 25-23.
In the third set, the Lady Red Spikers came out firing, seizing a 6-1 lead that forced the Lady Stags into an early timeout.
Despite the timeout, San Beda Lady Red Spikers continue to outshine the Lady stags using relentless side spikes to extend their lead to 13-6.
Angel Habacon and Janelle Bachar rained down unstoppable attacks, breaking through the Lady Stags’ defenses and dominating the third set, 25-16.
Echoing the finesse displayed in the previous set, Angel Habacon smashed through the Lady Stags’ defense with her powerful spikes, giving San Beda a lead, 11-8.
After a continuous blow of scores, Rianne Bendural, the rookie, stepped into the spotlight, adding to the growing tally with the entire team contributing to a lead, 17-10.
As the fourth set neared its conclusion, the San Beda Lady Red Spikers continued to build momentum, not giving their adversaries any opening, 23-12.
With the game on the line, San Beda sealed their victory in style, finishing with a 25-13 score.
Angel Habacon emerged as the star of the match, earning player of the game recognition with a commanding 25 points.
