IN THE SPOTLIGHT of digital intimacy and influencer-driven economies, the normalization of subscriber-based apps, like OnlyFans, has brought women to engage in content monetization, offering a new perspective on digital labor, gendered economies, and contemporary feminism.

As women participate in these spaces, it then brought a huge debate between autonomy and persistence, whether or not such a scene leans towards progress or defiance, challenging traditional norms on work, culture, and the evolving role of women in the modern age.

Driven needs and pleasure

The sudden shift to online sex work has predominantly been caused by several factors from autonomy, digital intimacy, and monetization. During the pandemic, the traditional economy became scarce, prompting female sex workers to turn digital which can easily attract a number of clients within the globe.

Not only did this shift make an easier alternative to traditional labor, it also provided women engaged in this work autonomy over their bodies, time, and earnings as they have direct control over their content and income.

This, then, creates a culture of monetization where creators have the freedom to set their own prices and terms of exchange, making it safer in comparison to physical sex work.

In return, many consumers of subscriber-based apps like OnlyFans, IsMyGirl, AVNStars, and Fansly, came to rise, since it created a cultural assimilation where public visibility on sex work became accessible by a great number of audience.

This creates a kind of digital intimacy between consumers and the content they consume, especially among men, who frequently use it for sexual exploration, prompting them to access more content.

Looking from this point of view, the rise of subscription-based apps stemmed from the assimilation of prejudice against sex work, making a huge number of people around the globe freely access such explicit content, which in turn challenges the norm on digital labor and feminism.

The rise of digital hustlers

The rapid rise of subscription-based apps are heavily based on the influencers who build and sustain these communities worldwide, such as Bonnie Blue, Ari Kytsya, The Bop House, and many more.

Bonnie Blue, a former OnlyFans star who now moved to Fansly after being banned from her “extreme challenge content,” made headlines when she slept with numerous men in the span of 12 hours whom she described as “barely legal, barely breathing, and the husbands.

Here, she particularly profits from the “loneliness” of young men through choosing someone from her audience whom she can engage in sex with nothing in exchange, a targeted marketing tactic aimed at creating a sense of intimacy between viewers and her content.

This has caused quite a negative reaction from the general public, with most expressing that it causes young men to develop a perception that revolves around reducing women as mere sexual objects. In the business aspect, however, Blue not only capitalizes on the male gaze but it also brought more attention to subscription-based apps across the internet, fueling the industry’s further growth.

On the other hand, Ari Kytsya, an adult performer, influencer, and mode, rose to fame on social media through engaging content that includes dance videos, modeling pictures, and makeup tutorials.

Her career began in 2020, and she became known due to being an OnlyFans model at first, which gave her an “unfiltered, liberated persona,” which is only ever boosted by her views, discouraging young women to pursue sex work as a first option.

Additionally, she remains open about her content, not afraid to break boundaries to go mainstream. In an interview, she mentioned how brands never wanted to collaborate with her due to being a “mattress actress,” referring to her being an OnlyFans model, but eventually the brand Urban Decay decided to have a partnership with her.

This collaboration is a big deal, with Ari stating that “We’re witnessing a revolution—finally seeing industry girls being recognized by big brands,” which allows women to truly express themselves as they please. Overall, her striving for success and being true has been the motto that continues to motivate her in having a fruitful career.

Lastly, the Bop House, which is run by Aishah Sofey and Sophie Rain. Five creators are currently residing within that house to create money through OnlyFans. The mansion is located in Florida, where it was launched on December 12, 2024, and the other members of the household include Summer Xiris, Lexi Marvel, Julia Filippo, and Alina Rose.

This content, however, has reached controversial stakes, especially on TikTok, due to Online Child Safety Issues. Despite the content being PG on TikTok, it is also filled with provocative selfies and links to their adult content accounts. A podcast known as The Briefing has brought out criticism towards the Bop House for encouraging young people to pursue adult content and looking too young, comparing it to a Playboy mansion while performing.

Yet, another adult content creator, Nova Hawthorne, came to the girls’ defense, stating that” I don’t think it’s the content creators’ job to be role models. It is, because of their huge popularity, something they need to be aware of in their marketing, but I don’t think it comes down to them being aware of that. It’s the people around the young people accessing social media to understand that this is a global platform which includes adults,” explaining the importance of handling the youth when it comes to their devices.

Perceptions of a woman’s pleasure

Throughout history, women have been judged and faced with critique, leading them to strive for treatment of equality. The mistreatment has caused in the inflation of sex work that has been in existing for centuries and has evolved in time, and at this time in mordern age, they have been using this line of work to make a stable living.

This is one of the aspects that women have been criticized for but, over the years, people have grown more open to the idea of it, treating it as a line of work for survival. On the liberal perspective, they accept the concept of it, where they see it as a chance for women to have a sense of identity and become financially independent due to the freedom of content creation within the online platform.

Since Onlyfans provides various functions that allow no limitation of control in the videos or pictures they wish to showcase, they can have a signature that gives them a proper identity, giving them a chance to have a choice on their bodies.

Meanwhile, the conservative perspective believes this type of job as exploitative and it commodifies the perspective that a woman’s value can only be seen through the use of her body. This can be connected to a stigma that leads to negative societal judgement, and not being seen as someone to be respected, which is usually portrayed in social media, leaving many viewers’ minds affected by this mindset.

However, till this day, there is still an on going debate on whether sex work is something negative or positive at this time of modern age, leaving them to continue to navigate the between empowerment and societal judgement.

Women throughout the years have continued to practice sex work in various means, despite the criticisms each day in order to survive and make a sustainable living. However, even if there is still an ongoing debate on whether or not this type of occupation has a good or bad impact, the women who choose this line work still deserve respect. Any woman around the world in any status has the freedom in choosing who they want to be and have their own identity.

In today’s society filled with judgement and criticism, women continue to aim for greatness and yield their identities as their armor that they deserve the respect and admiration, especially in media where people are free to share love or hate towards anything with no hesitation.
