THE CITY SIMMERS beneath the blazing summer heat as the academic year finally draws to a close. With deadlines accomplished and freedom within reach, what better way to welcome the season than with a beach escape?

Beyond the crashing waves and sunlit shores, let’s dive into the seaside destinations most highly recommended by Bedans.

There are countless beaches near the Metro, some only a two to three-hour drive away, that are definitely worth visiting. All it takes is a little research to find destinations that match one’s vibe, preferences, and travel needs.

Elyu in the eyes of the local

Jiliana Arongat, a sophomore of the Department of Operations Management and a La Union local, says that Baywalk, Agoo La Union, and Agoo Eco Park are among her highly recommended beach destinations.

According to her, the place is less crowded compared to other top destinations in La Union, such as the famous San Juan Beach, and is relatively affordable, making it perfect for students traveling on a budget.

“You could have a great time while spending less,” Jiliana highlighted.

From the perspective of a local, Jiliana’s recommendations offer a glimpse into the quieter and more affordable side of La Union, proving that hidden gems can be just as memorable as popular tourist destinations.

The affordable alternative

Guile Shaimond Rey Coliyat, an Operations Management freshman, recalled the recent visit of San Beda’s swimming team to Puerto Galera, a renowned beach destination on the northeastern coast of Mindoro Island. According to him, the place reminded him of Boracay.

“Puerto Galera honestly reminds me of Boracay, but with far less hassle and fewer expenses,” he said, noting that the destination can be reached through a single ferry ride from Batangas Pier and is generally more affordable than Boracay.

Furthermore, Guile advises that tourists also should consider the current crises that we face today, “Because of the oil crisis, I highly recommend Puerto Galera. Not only is it nearby, but it is also highly accessible for students who want an unforgettable experience.”

For him, Puerto Galera proves that a memorable beach getaway does not have to come with the cost and inconvenience often associated with more popular destinations. Its accessibility, affordability, and scenic beauty make it an attractive choice for students seeking a worthwhile summer escape.

A splurge worth the sand

On the other hand, if you are not particularly tight on budget and are willing to spend a little more, Marco Luna, a student from the Department of Language and Literature, recommends Montemar Beach Club Resort, a destination his family has visited almost every year since 2016, making it especially memorable for him.

He explained that the beach club stands out to him because it perfectly balances nature, comfort, and environmental awareness. Unlike overly commercialized resorts, the place also supports sea turtle, or pawikan, preservation programs, where guests can witness the release of baby pawikans into the sea and participate in other sea turtle-related activities.

“Seeing how the area values marine life and teaches visitors about protecting sea turtles makes the experience unique compared to other tourist spots,” Marco said, highlighting the resort’s commitment to environmental awareness and marine life conservation.

While Montemar Beach Club Resort may not be the cheapest beach destination, Marco believes the experience makes it worth every penny. He also suggests that students can save money on the trip by traveling in groups, planning ahead, or visiting during less crowded seasons.

Surf for less

While Siargao is widely regarded as the surfing capital of the country, Baler has also established itself as a premier destination for surfing enthusiasts. For Trixia Nicole Paloma, a graduating Psychology student, Aliya Surf Resort is an ideal place to unwind, offering a relaxing atmosphere alongside exciting activities such as surfing.

“This beach stood out sa ‘kin because you really can feel the beach vibe and it isn’t overrated,” Trixie shared. She also noted that the destination is budget-friendly, as it frequently offers promos and discounts, especially for students.

For Trixie, Baler offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation without the overwhelming crowds often associated with more popular beach destinations. Its laid-back atmosphere and student-friendly rates make it an excellent choice for those looking to make the most of their summer break.

More than just places to cool off, these beaches provide opportunities to create memories, reconnect with nature, and take a well-deserved break from the demands of student life. After months of deadlines, examinations, and responsibilities, perhaps the best souvenir this summer is not the photos taken along the shore, but the moments of rest, adventure, and freedom found between the waves.
