WITH THE FIRST election for academic year (A.Y.) 2023-2024 approaching, this election season has seen the arrival of Ma. Beatrix “Bea” Lareza. A candidate hoping to embody the mantra of Husay At Tibay, she is running for the position of First-Year Representative under the returning political party, Ang MITHI. 

A new student entering the Lions’ Den, Bea was a former public school student and a current Girl Scout who fearlessly seeks to redefine the Bedan experience. Let’s take a look at her vision and platforms for the freshmen in an exclusive one-on-one interview. 

Q. Introduce Yourself. 

A.  I am Bea and I am running for the first-year batch rep under the political party of Ang Mithi 

Q. In a short anecdote, would you please introduce to us who Bea is?     

A.  Ako si Bea, galing sa broken family, palaki ng lola, isang girl socunt. At dito masasabi ko na palaki ako sa kalsada, at alam ko at naka pamuno na ako sa lansangan at naramdaman ko yung feeling na ma-leftout. At ito rin pala ang isa sa rason kung bakit ako nasa Ang Mithi kasi naramdaman ko na belong ako at included ako. Si Bea, matapang siya at nandoon ang prinsipiyo na kailangan niyang tumulong, hindi lang basta kailangan, gusto niyang tumulong dahil nasa puso niyang tumulong. 

Q. A month into San Beda, what are the problems you noticed leading you to run for the position of first-year representative?  

A. Sa pagtakbo ko bilang first year batch rep, napansin ko na kailangan ng mga Bedista o Bedans ng isang check up, hindi naman clinical check up just to check kung kamusta yung pagiging first year nila. Kasi as a first-year student or as a freshman, naiintindihan ko na we feel pressured, we feel excited, halo-halong emotions. So isa po sa platform ko actually, Vibe Check to check kung kamusta na ba sila academically, co-curicularly, and non-academic. 

Q. What is your principle of leadership, and how does this align with the political banner you’ll carry in San Beda?  

A. As a girl scout, Isa po talaga sa prinsipyo ko ang tumulong nang bukal sa puso and masasabi ko na isa doon ang prinsipyo ng Ang Mithi. Kasi si Ang Mithi, since reestablished kami and kahit reestablished ang partido, talagang lumapit ako sa kanila to consult kung may first year batch rep na sila and kinuwento ko kung anong background ko. And dun palang, naramdaman ko na I feel included, I feel belonged, at yun ang gusto kong ipadama sa bawat Bedista na hindi sila nag-iisa, may kasama sila sa bawat laban na haharapin nila. 

Q. As you said, ikaw ang lumapit sa political party. So first choice mo ba o nag scout ka sa tatlong political party? 

A. Actually, nag tingin po ako ng background ng tatlong partido at nakita ko na si Ang Mithi na alligned sa prinsipyo ko na meron ako.  

Q. So that’s why you chose Ang Mithi? 

A. Yes 

Q.What social issue or issues pertaining to the students are close to your heart that you seek to address? 

A. Since nabanggit ko po kanina na isa sa mga plataporma ko is student inclusivity and student belongingness. Isa yon sa nakikit kong gusto ko ma lutas na problema inside the campus. Inside the campus gusto ko maramdaman nila na hindi sila nagiisa. At gusto kong bawat concern, bawat gusto nilang sabihin is marinig, at bawat tulong na gusto nilang maibigay, at bawat tulong na kaya naming ibigay o kaya kong ibigay is aalay ko sa kanila sa bawat Bedista. 

Q. What are the primary concerns of your batch that you noticed or observed to be neglected by the council or by the administration? 

A. Since galing po ako sa isang public high school, hindi ako galing Beda high, actually ngayon lang po ako nakapagaral sa isang private school. Pero base po sa assessment ko at sa maraming pagtatanong at consult sa iba’t-ibang Bedista and sa pagtulong na rin ng partido ko na ma-identify yung mga problemang yon. Paulit ulit ko pong sinasabi na isa sa plataporma ko at isa sa nais kong i-address is yung student belongingness and student inclusivity. And gusto ko pang ipag-igtingin na marinig yung bawat estudyante at bawat Bedista or bawat Bedans sa loob ng campus. And so far, hindi ko pa po nakikita yung mga need pa i-address pero yun po ang nais kong gawin. 

Q. With mentioning student belongingness, how do you intend to specifically address that concern actively to the student body? 

A. Actively to the student body…yun po yung batch 2027 Vibe Check and yung paggawa ng students’ experience framework. So yun po yung… to make them feel belonged and to make them feel heard. Kasi po sa framework na yun nagiging basehan kung pano ba ka-okay ang experience ng bawat Bedista at ano pa yung mga problema na gusto pang matulugan sila. 

Q. How do you intend to position yourself as the youngest member of the council among your fellow executive officers? 

A. Hindi naman po ibigsabihin na kami yung partido na pinakabata kami na yung parang mas below. Sabi nga nila mas marami pang alam o nagagawa ang bata kesa sa mga dati na. Pero hindi naman ibigsabihin non na minamaliit natin sila. So kahit si Mithi ang pinakabata, si Mithi rin po ang pinakamalawak na student network na sakop. Kaya niyang makipagcoordinate to different organizations, marmi siyang kilala na maaaring tumulong rin po sa pagtaguyod natin o pagtulong sa mga Bedans. 

Q. If elected, share your banner platform for the first-year students of San Beda 

A. Yung banner platform ko po talaga is, paulit ulit ko pong sinasabi kanina, is the Student Experience Framework and Batch 2027 Vibe Check. So it is intended na i-check kung kamusta sila, kung okay ba ang experience nila within the campus, ano na ba…okay pa ba tayo, okay pa ba sila. And with those feedbacks and insights from them, dun po tayo gagawa ng iba’t-ibang programs and events along the way to know kung ano ba ang mas kailangan ng bawat sector. Like music sector sa loob ng… music, dancing, iba’t-ibang interest nila such as academic, non-academic, and co curricular. Dun natin ibabase ang needs nila at sabay sabay tayong gagawa nun, hindi lang basta yung student council. Belong din po yung bawat estudyante dun kasi sila ang nagsasabi satin ng problema nila at sama sama natin lulutasin kung ano ba ang problema at kung ano ba ang kailangan ibigay para sa kanila. 

Q. Aside from the Vibe Check that you’re pertaining from the very start, what do you have in store for the first-year students of San Beda? 

A. Isa din po sa platforms ko ang the Photocopy Subsidy. Yung Photocopy Subsidy for freshmen, parang bibigay po siya ng photocopies dito sa school is…magbibigay po siya ng parang discounts for freshmen during midterms or finals if ever need nila ng copies ng kanilang notes or reviewers. And isa pa po doon is Freshmen Networking Week. Ang Freshmen Networking Week is… magiinvite po tayo ng different organizations like corporations, institutions, sa loob ng campus para din mabigyan ng iba pang opportunities ang freshmen. Kasi hindi naman pong maiiwasan na every freshmen is seeking for opportunities and iba diyan gusto maging working-student. So yun po yung i-ooffer natin sa kanila na isang week to showcase opportunities and with the connections to other organizations. 

Q. To follow up with the other platform regarding the photocopy subsidy. How do you plan to work with that sa council? Are you open also for other batches or is it solely focused on the first-year students? If so, how will you disseminate the subsidy, and how do you plan to execute it for approval and implementation?  

A. Open naman din po si Photocopy Subsidy sa other year level pero mas priority si freshmen since tinatakbo ko po is first-year batch rep. So mas prioritize ko po yung batch ko, and if ever na kaya pa ng budget ng student council to provide photocopies for other year levels, why not naman po.  

Q.For the last question, why is Bea qualified to be the first-year batch rep 

A. Una sa lahat, aside po sa ako lang ang nagiisang babae na tatakbo bilang first year batch rep. Sanay rin po akong magtrabaho kahit madumihan ako, as a girl scout, kasi sana kami na walang arte sa katawan, walang hindrance o walang reason samin na tumigil sa pagtulong sa ibang tao. And aside from that as a girl scout po, gusto kong ipagpatuloy ang nasimulan ko during my high school days. Na i-spend ko halos buong high school life ko sa student council and gusto kong ipakita sa… gusto kong ipatunayan na kahit galing ako sa isang public school at kahit ngayon ko lang naranasan mapa… na pumasok sa isang private school kasi finally kaya na namin mag bayad. Gusto ko ring ipagpatuloy yung nasimulan ko na “kung kaya ko sa labas o kaya ko sa community, kayang kaya ko rin sa loob ng university.”
