IN LINE WITH the celebration of Women’s Month, the Student Council (SC), in partnership with the Bedan Advocacy and Consciousness Enhancement Society (BACES), and the Kapisanang Agham ng San Beda, conducted a self-defense workshop called “Damsel Not in Distress” at the Lydia Tan Sy Lobby, March 7.
With growing concerns throughout the years regarding physical violence related to “unwanted advances and harassment in different environments and situations,” the workshop was led by multiple 10th Dan belt holders and Grand Master Jonathan Makiling Abaya.
Mr. Abaya and his associates taught various Bedans the concepts of self-defense. Most of the participants attended their in-person physical education classes while some voluntarily signed-up for the event.
The discussants shared their various knowledge of self-defense, simple techniques that are part of our daily lives, and simple movements to protect ourselves and those around them. Moreover, during the break time, the Lady Red Jins performed drills and basic techniques during the event’s exhibition performance.
Eunice Bermudez, the current SC President, as well as the activity chairperson of the said event, emphasized how significant the activity was in straying from the misconception of “uplifting women over men.” She then argued that “feminism is about empowering women and being the voice of women to provide them equal opportunities and rights with men”.
Furthermore, she also said some goals that were aimed before conducting the said event. Saying, “Damsel Not in Distress: A Self-Defense Workshop is an activity that we opened for everyone under the Student Council’s celebration of Women’s Month.”
She then added that “the Student Council believes that safety and self-assurance is for everyone,” further stating how this event will be beneficial for everyday struggles that might occur in every woman’s life.
