EXTENDING THEIR HOT streak after opening victories, the San Beda Red Paddlers continued their undefeated run in the second day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 100 Table Tennis Tournament held yesterday, November 13, at the MVP Gym.

The Men’s team swept both their matches, defeating the Mapúa University (MU) Table Tennis Team and Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Table Tennis Team, 3-0. The Women’s squad also had a successful day, winning 3-1 against EAC and 3-0 over the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Table Tennis Bombers.

SBU vs MU (Men’s)

Opening their day two campaign, the Men’s team delivered a convincing 3-0 sweep against Mapúa.

Despite a close 11-8 affair in the first set, Matt Andrew Ramos flexed his form over MU’s Ginete in the second and third sets, 11-3, 11-5, to put San Beda ahead in the team-tie at 1-0.

Earl Tolentino continued the Red Paddlers’ onslaught in the second singles, with a convincing 11-7 first set. Despite the grittiness displayed by Mapúa’s Lapitan to stretch the second set to 14-12, Tolentino closed out the latter with a 11-9 third set to secure the Paddlers’ second point.

Finally, the tandem of Michael Angelo Aguna and John Daryll Nominador delivered the final blow to MU’s Crescini and Quilantip in three sets, 11-7, 13-11, and 11-9 to complete the 3-0 sweep.

SBU vs EAC (Men’s)

The Men’s team continued their dominant showcase in their second team match of the day, defeating EAC in clean 3-0 fashion.

After dropping the second set in the first singles, 9-11, Tolentino managed to outlast EAC’s Delmo in the third and fourth, 11-5 and 14-12, to take the first team point.

Ramos breezed through EAC’s Evangelista in the first two sets at 11-3 a piece, but managed to drop the third set, 8-11, to force a decider. Fortunately, Ramos came through with an 11-8 fourth set to put the Paddlers at a 2-0 standing.

Afterwards, Aguna and Nominador made quick work of EAC’s Sta. Ana and Uy with a 11-3, 11-5, and 11-4 scoreline, hammering the 3-0 win at the expense of the Generals.

SBU vs EAC (Women’s)

The Women’s team answered EAC’s challenge in a resounding manner to notch the 3-1 win.

For the first singles’ match, Angelyn Joy Chavez took on EAC’s Fresco, who fell short in the first set at 10-12. Despite obtaining the advantage during the second, Chavez fell short of closing the set, allowing Fresco to claw back into the game and take the set at 10-12.

With her back against the wall, Chavez succumbed to Tado’s continuous pressure, dropping the third set at 4-11 to hand the Red Paddlers their first loss in the team matchup.

Seeking redemption in the second singles, Danaia Reblora escaped EAC’s Tado in a four-set slugfest, taking the first set until 18 points, 18-16. Despite dropping the fourth set at 12-14, Reblora answered back with a 11-4 rout to put the standings at one point each.

Aiming to use the momentum to their advantage, the duo of Jaylyn Valencia and Novy Mae Digamon asserted their dominance over EAC’s Collantes and Borabo, 11-3, 11-2, 11-3, adding another point to the Paddlers and forcing a game four.

In the end, Reblora prevailed over Fresco with a resounding performance, securing scores of 11-5, 11-3, and 11-7 to complete the 3-1 comeback.

SBU vs JRU (Women’s)

The Mendiola-based squad was relentless in its final match of the day, securing a 3-0 win at the expense of the JRU Table Tennis Bombers.

Chavez quickly redeemed her first-match loss, thrashing JRU’s Tabada with decisive scores of 11-1, 11-6, 11-1, putting the Paddlers ahead at 1-0.

Reblora then maintained her winning form against JRU’s Nueva, wasting no time in securing an 11-5, 11-6, and 11-7 victory to give the Women’s team a 2-0 lead.

Concluding their team match, Nicole Gaspar and Ryza Mae Ricafort dealt the finishing blow for the team win, besting JRU’s Romo and Manlapaz, 11-1, 11-4, and 11-5.

The Red Paddlers will continue their quest for the coveted Season 100 crown today, November 14, with the Men’s and Women’s team facing the Benilde Blazing Paddlers and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Table Tennis Team at the same venue.
