THE LADY RED Spikers faced a tough challenge in their NCAA Season 100 opener against the UPHSD Lady Altas, suffering a straight-set, 18-25, 26-28, 16-25 defeat last February 22 at the SSC-R Gym.
The first set saw the Lady Red Spikers struggling to find their rhythm as Perpetual’s aggressive net defense and strategic attacks gave them an early lead. Errors from the side of the Lady Red Spikers saw perpetual start strong with a 4-0 advantage to start the set.
The Altas continued to rack up the points, forcing a timeout from the San Beda side with the Lady Red Spikers trailing 6-13. Despite San Beda’s efforts to close the gap, errors at crucial moments allowed the Lady Altas to secure an 18-25 win.
In the second set, San Beda came alive, displaying a more cohesive and determined playstyle. Led by Angel Habacon’s powerful attacks and Rianne Bedural’s solid floor defense, the Lady Red Spikers managed to keep pace with Perpetual. Both squads traded leads early in the set, with no team able to take a decisive advantage. However, despite their improved performance, they fell just short in a thrilling 26-28 finish.
By the third set, fatigue and Perpetual’s consistent plays began to take their toll on the Lady Red Spikers. While they continued to fight, the Lady Altas took advantage of their well-executed offensive system to close out the match with a 16-25 victory.
Habacon led the team with 10 points, while Bedural and Chynna Castillo contributed eight and seven points, respectively.
Determined to bounce back, the Lady Red Spikers face the Arellano Lady Chiefs in home territory on Friday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m. at the SBU Gym.
