BRINGING GLORY TO their sport, the San Beda Red Jins participated in the Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) which organized the 2023 National New Face of the Year Championships at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila, last May 22 to 23.

With over 2,800 taekwondo players who participated in the event, the San Beda Red Jins participated with flying colors carrying the University’s pride at their backs.

The Red Jins didn’t prepare for anything different from their usual routine for the said competition. However, they added some new techniques specifically for the rookies. This is to observe if the new recruits are incorporating and adapting to the training regimen that they are doing into their tournaments.

Pertaining to the conditioning routine, the Red Jins do strictly follow these drills such as running, sprints, stairs, and ladders for modifying the stamina of players.

Coach Jason Locsin, assistant coach of the San Beda Red Jins, shared that the routine is present through the years and was made by the former head coach, Coach Noel. Pertaining to the cardio routine that they do on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, it was said that it has been their routine since the time of their former Coach Noel.

When asked regarding the kind of challenges that they’ve encountered upon entering the tournament, Coach Jason answered that aside from the conflict of schedules with the student-athletes, injuries encountered were also a great hindrance towards their performance. However, he also stated that it is normal because it is the nature of the sport itself.

Coach Jason also shared some of the most notable players from the team that excelled in the tournament such as Kristine Antoniette Kiamco who bagged the silver medal and Myles Quilaton who finished strongly with Gold.

He then left a message to the Red Jins saying, “Well, magsawa na sila kaka-PEP talk ko every day. Alam naman nila, we have our goal. Hopefully ma-defend pa din namin yung crown this year since face-to-face na. Trabaho lamang, wag makuntento, tsaka magtulungan lang kami,” Coach Jason expressed.

In addition, while saying thanks to the Bedan community, the Assistant Coach also shared the success of the Red Jins in the previous SEA Games event where he mentioned that 12 medalists from the team succeeded in the competition considering that most participants were already Olympians. He added that the Red Jins’ success somehow brought representation to the country.

In closing, he also has some sentiments to say to the Bedan community, “Sa community naman sana suportahan kami. Sana mabigyan kami ng spotlight as well. Actually, yung taekwondo team is very successful eh, all throughout the years. Last time, ilang representative natin ASEAN. We had several medalists.”

He added, “Yun yung aid nila na maglalaro for SEA Games and somehow nabigyan tayo ng ticket at mag represent ng country. Ayun lang sana support din nila yung taekwondo. Thank you,” Coach Jason stated.
