CITING “SAFETY CONCERNS,” the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recommended the temporary closure of the campus footbridge and entrance near the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 2 Legarda Station last October 21, 2023.
Gate 4, commonly referred to as the “LRT Gate,” serves as one of the primary entry and exit points into San Beda University (SBU). Positioned adjacent to the Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) Gym, this gate has long provided convenient access to various parts of Legarda Street for Bedans, particularly due to its proximity to the entrance to the Legarda Station of the LRT Line 2.
However, a significant headache for Bedans emerged with the temporary closure of the gate to accommodate the DPWH’s “waterworks project,” aimed at installing booster pumps and pumping stations along the Estero de San Miguel to address flooding issues during the rainy season. Consequently, many Bedans were redirected to use the University’s main entrance along Mendiola Street.
In a letter addressed to Rev. Fr. John Paul II Plana, O.S.B., SBU Vice President for Administration, last February 14, DPWH District Engineer Gerard Opulencia mentioned that an adjustment in the timetable works for the construction was made due to the “failure of the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) to provide a work clearance from December 2023 to January 2024.” Amid this, Opulencia clarified that the ongoing project is projected to be done by March.
The DPWH District Engineer then assured the community that the campus footbridge, connecting to LRT Line 2, is expected to be cleared for reopening after the completion of DPWH’s waterworks project in the area.
