DELIVING INTO THE realms of styling, confidence boosting, and personality development, the San Beda Junior Marketing Association (SBJMA) launched the newly branded “Bedistyle 101: Grooming Your Bedan Character Through Glitz, Good Manners and Right Conduct” at the Pamanang Bedista last May 17.
Underscoring self-care and power dressing in the workplace, SBJMA invited The Body Shop’s Learning and Development Manager, Ms. Argie Lingat; Lifestyle Publicist, Mr. Kevin John Conopio; Digital Lifestyle Editor of Art Plus Magazine, Ms. Mika Reyes; Fashion stylist, creative director and fashion artist at Village Pipol Magazine, Nash August; and Vice President of Golden Budha Training Corporation, Matthew A. Tejada
Ms. Lingat lectured on the basic self-care for the skin, such as wearing sunscreen, hydrating, keeping the hands off the face, getting regular skin check-ups, and choosing the right skin care. She furthermore explained the three “Youthful Skincare Ritual,” starting with the cleanser, a toner, and lastly with a moisturizer. Scrutinizing what lessons should the Bedan community take from her discussion, Ms. Lingat said, “what is important: we educate people in terms of the basic routine first.” She was later joined by Matthew Tejada in the round table discussion afterwards.
Further into the event, a roundtable discussion took place with guest speakers in the likes of Mr. Conopio, Ms. Reyes, and Mr. August. Here, they entertained questions from the audiences, both in-person and online, about power dressing in various industries, confidence in power dressing, and blending one’s own style with power dressing in the professional world.
Ms. Mika, on the other hand, explained that corporations have clothes guidelines and regulations in comparison to creative workspaces that are more lenient. “Just follow [corporation guidelines and regulations],” Ms. Mika said during the discussion, adding that “first impressions really matter…sometimes putting in a little bit more effort is really important.”
The appropriateness of attire is what Mr. Conopio told the listeners. Moreover, he said that “you have to find that certain style when you start experimenting [on clothes]…The importance of dressing…so long as you’re confident wearing it, you will just naturally be confident.”
Mr. August, in terms of personal styling, stressed, “Be resourceful, don’t be afraid to repeat it, and explore and explore and don’t give an F.”
Following the discourse, student participants lined up for the Mix and Match Outfit Runway Activity, gauged by Mr. Conopio, Ms. Reyes, and Mr. August themselves.
After the event, Mr. August shared that he had a “bit of challenge” as an invited guest, saying that “hindi pala lahat into fashion stuff ‘yung audiences namin. So, it’s another…challenge lang for me kasi all I thought kasi is mga fashion student [‘yung] discussion. Pero, since hindi pala lahat, we have to parang change lang the topic that I’m about to discuss. But then I’m so happy to discuss topics, things and such in San Beda.”
Additionally, he shared his message to the Bedan community two things: “First is to be authentic, not just in style, but even in real life. And last is to be creative.”
Ms. Mika, who revealed her “excitement” to be in San Beda University (SBU), told the Bedan community that “When it comes to style, I’m sure you know what to do ‘cause I saw a magagandang outfit naman kanina. All you have to do is just be true to yourself and to take breaks and to remind yourself to love yourself also.”
Also addressing the Bedan community, Mr. Conopio said, “study smart. Just focus on what they want. It’s okay to fail… Then when it comes to fashion, I would say be creative, but always remember to be appropriate also. That’s what I always thinking of. I can experiment on different clothes, but at the end of the day, it should be appropriate on the occasion, on who you are meeting, on what you’re doing. It’s a matter of following proper decorum.”
